| Adolescent Therapy |
| |
Adolescents are obviously different from
adults, and must be approached differently in a therapeutic
setting. The therapist will consider their many factors,
including individual developmental issues, values and
belief systems, age, gender, cultural background, and
environmental considerations - particularly peer influences.
Therapists often will not prematurely diagnose or
label adolescents as this may do more psychological
harm than good in the long run. In addition, therapists
will often involve the adolescent's family. Naturally,
the family can be a powerful support system and agent
of change in the adolescent's development. In particular,
those therapists who are trained in Family
Systems theory - which focuses on the role of the
family as a whole who works together to maintain a balance
(whether functional or dysfunctional) - will strive
to involve the entire family in treatment.
